Respecting lesbian, gay and bisexual people in the workplace
Take the case of Tony, who is gay, and works in the kitchens of a large hotel. His straight colleagues, both male and female, are always ‘joking’ about his being gay, and, although the behavour borders on harassment, his boss doesn’t want to confront the issue.
How do you ensure that people are in a position to know the difference between inoffensive and offensive behaviour and respond to that behaviour appropriately?
More than one in twenty people in the current UK workforce are lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB).
Since 2003, The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations and now The Equality Act 2010 have outlawed discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation.
